Madanois Christian Receives Asylum Review

NEW YORK (CN) - The Second Circuit granted asylum review to an Indonesian man who claimed religious persecution, ruling that the immigration judge and Board of Immigration Appeals ignored the alleged pattern of Christian persecution in Indonesia.

The BIA denied asylum to Reza Abdul Mufied, a Madanois Christian, because the alleged persecution was not "so systemic or pervasive that as to amount to a pattern or practice of persecution" and cited a Third Circuit ruling that defined a "pattern or practice" as the "systemic, pervasive or organized" persecution of a group.

On remand, Judge Katzmann urged the BIA to elaborate on the "systemic, pervasive or organized" standard it applied to Mufied's claims. See ruling.
