Loughner Wins Stay to Block Release of Federal Mug Shot

(CN) - A federal judge issued an order Friday that temporarily blocks the release of federal mug shots taken of Jared Lee Loughner after his alleged attempt to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords - a shooting spree that injured more than a dozen and killed six, including a federal judge.

The one-page order, signed by U.S. District Judge Larry Burns, states that the court will issue a final decision on the matter at a hearing on Feb. 18.

Chief Judge John M. Roll was one of six killed in the Jan. 8 shooting at an open meeting for Giffords in a Safeway parking lot. More than a dozen others were shot or injured that day, including Giffords who survived being shot in the head at close range.

Loughner faces federal charges for the attempted assassination of a member of Congress and two congressional aides. The only currently released photograph of Loughner, grinning with a shaved head, was reportedly taken by the Pima County Sheriff's Department after his arrest.
