Loughner Indicted

TUCSON (CN) - A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted Jared Loughner for the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, and prosecutors say more charges will follow.

Loughner, 22, also was charged with the attempted murders of Gifford's aides Ron Barber and Pamela Simon.

Loughner has yet to be charged with killing U.S. District Judge John Roll and Giffords aide Gabe Zimmerman during his shooting spree on Jan. 8. U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke said that those charges, which could involve the death penalty, are still under investigation.

"This case also involves potential death-penalty charges, and department rules require us to pursue a deliberate and thorough process," Burke said in a statement. "Today's charges are just the beginning of our legal action, and we are working diligently to ensure that our investigation is thorough and that justice is done for the victims and their families."

Loughner has been in federal custody in Phoenix since Jan. 8.
