WEST PALM BEACH (CN) - A diamond dealer sued a jeweler for $146,182, the sum it paid for a 5.02 carat oval-cut diamond. The dealer says the rock fell out of its owner's ring at an art opening, and the person who found it sold it on the cheap - for $55,000 - without any documentation, to a West Palm Beach jewelry broker, who sold it to defendant Provident Jewelry & Loan.
Plaintiff Diamante the Diamond Broker says it bought the stone from Provident, then sent it to the Gemological Institute of America for grading and analysis. The GIA identified it as the gem the woman lost at the art opening. The woman sued Diamante and won. Diamante says Provident was dealing in stolen property. It wants its $146,182 back.
