Losing S.D. Senate|Candidate Convicted

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (CN) - A South Dakota jury convicted a failed Republican candidate for U.S. Senate of 12 election-related felonies.

Annette Bosworth lost the 2014 primary to former Gov. Mike Rounds, who went on to win the general election.

A state jury on Wednesday found Bosworth guilty of six counts of filing a false instrument for election and six counts of perjury.

Bosworth signed documents stating she had personally witnessed signatures to her nomination petition though she was out of the country when the signatures were gathered, the South Dakota Attorney General's Office said.

Bosworth faces up to two years imprisonment and a $4,000 fine for each count.

The conviction could jeopardize her medical license. Bosworth, a physician, said she was out of the country on a medical mission while the signatures were gathered.

She is to be sentenced in July.
