WASHINGTON (CN) - Longline fishing would be prohibited in a 30-nautical mile area around the Northern Mariana Islands, and purse seine fishing prohibited throughout the Mariana Archipelago, if a Western Pacific Fishery Management Council proposal takes effect.
The proposed amendment to the Fishery Ecosystem Plan for western Pacific Pelagic Fisheries would be to keep the various types of gear from getting caught up in each other, and to conserve fish stocks such as bigeye, yellowfin and skipjack tuna.
The Secretary of Commerce would have to approve the amendment before it could become effective.
