(CN) - After the 11th Circuit deemed his original sentence too lenient, a federal judge in Miami imposed a 21-year sentence on convicted terrorist supporter Jose Padilla.
Authorities arrested Padilla, a Brooklyn native, in 2002 at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, based on suspicion that Padilla was involved in a "dirty bomb" plot.
It would be another five years before a Florida jury convicted Padilla of aiding terrorists. A federal judge imposed a 17.5-year prison sentence, but the 11th Circuit vacated the term as too lenient since the sentencing guidelines carried the potential for a 30-year term.
U.S. District Judge Marcia Cooke resentenced Padilla to 21 years for conspiracy to murder, kidnap and maim individuals in a foreign country; conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists; and providing material support to terrorists.
Declared an enemy combatant for his alleged ties to al-Qaida, Padilla spent 3 1/2 years after his arrest in military custody in South Carolina without access to an attorney or family.
Padilla has for years pressed unsuccessful claims over his alleged torture during that detention, claiming jailers subjected him to death threats, sleep and sensory deprivation, severe pain, and other enhanced interrogation techniques.
The 43-year-old is currently being held at the Federal Detention Center, Miami.
