LOS ANGELES (CN) - Owners of an L.A.-area ambulance company were sentenced Monday to nine years and six years in prison for conspiracy to defraud Medicare of $13 million.
Aleksey Muratov, aka Russ Muratov, 32, was sentenced to nine years in federal prison, and Alex Kapri, aka Alex Kapriyelov, 56, to six years and three months, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
The owned and operated Alpha Ambulance, which no longer is in business.
They provided ambulance services to people who didn't need it, altered documents and submitted false Medicare claims, prosecutors said.
They submitted more than $49 million in claims and Medicare paid Alpha more than $13 million for the claims, many of which were fraudulent.
The Medicare Fraud Strike Force, which operates in nine cities, has charged more than 1,700 defendants who billed Medicare for more than $5.5 billion, prosecutors said in the statement.
