Libertarians Challenge Open-Carry Gun Ban

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (CN) - Kansas' Libertarian Party challenged the constitutionality of a Kansas City ordinance banning the open carrying of firearms.

The party sued the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., in Wyandotte County Court.

It claims the law violates the 2nd Amendment and the Kansas Constitution. It also claims the law would create a hodge-podge of local regulations that will make compliance in the Kansas City area impossible.

"Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City Kansas is one of four communities that make up the Kansas City metropolitan area, where each community has a different policy and ordinance related to the ability to open-carry a firearm," the complaint states.

"An individual can travel fewer than 30 miles, through five different communities, each of which have a different position related to this civil right."

The Libertarian Party is represented by Lucas L. Thompson, of Ledbetter Thompson, in Topeka.

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City Kansas, Mayor Joe Reardon and 10 council members were named as defendants.
