Lemmy Kilmister, 70

(CN) - Metal icon and Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister died just three days after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

Kilmister, who went from being a roadie for the Jimi Hendrix Experience to the leader of his own much-loved British rock band, reportedly died at home while playing a favorite video game, was 70.

His Motorhead band mates announced Kilmister's death on its Facebook page. It later announced the band will not continue without its leader.

Kilmister became enamored with rock and roll after seeing the Beatles perform at the Cavern Club. After his association with Hendrix, he joined Hawkwind, an English psychedelic rock band in 1971, only to be kicked out for his extensive drug use. He formed Motorhead in 1975.

Among the scores of younger bands who site Kilmister as an influence are Anthrax and Metallica.

In a statement, Ozzy Osbourne described his longtime friend as "a warrior and a legend."

"I will see you on the other side," Osbourne said.
