Lawyers Press Case Against Governor

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) - Investigators who filed an open-records lawsuit against Gov. Matt Blunt's administration seek fines and penalties, alleging violations of the state Sunshine Law.

In an amended petition, attorneys Louis Leonatti and Joseph Maxwell offered details to their allegations that Blunt's administration violated laws on open government and records retention, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

"The office of the governor and the governor have knowingly and purposely violated the Sunshine Law," the lawsuit states. The fine for knowingly violating the Sunshine Law is $1,000 - $5,000 for an intentional offense.

A governor's spokesman told the Post-Dispatch that the amended petition is an eleventh-hour effort by a team that is struggling to form a coherent case. The spokesman said the governor's office has saved back up tapes containing the emails in question.
