Lawyer Suspended for Billing Mistress-Client

(CN) - An attorney who had sex with a client and then billed her for his services cannot practice law indefinitely, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled.

Thomas Lowe unconditionally admitted the allegations, according to the court's opinion authored by Justice Alan Page.

The Director of the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility filed the petition for disciplinary action against Lowe for engaging in sexual relations with a vulnerable client and billing her for those meetings.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that Lowe, who was married, had known the woman for many years and became her attorney when she was going through a divorce in August 2011.

Lowe sent the woman bills for legal services at the times they were having sex, coding their liaisons as meetings or drafting memos.

The woman brought the affair to light in a hospital while recovering from an attempted suicide after Lowe ended their legal and personal relationship.

Lowe has been suspended indefinitely, and he cannot petition for reinstatement for 15 months.
