Lawyer, 71, Gets 18 Months in Prison

ST. LOUIS (CN) - A lawyer who ripped off 70 clients and seven businesses for almost $800,000 was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. Frank N. Carter, 71, stole money his clients had been awarded from civil settlements. He loaned some of it to clients and used the rest to keep his business going.

Carter's lawyers asked for house arrest, saying they believed all the money would be repaid. But U.S. District Judge Rodney Sippel agreed with the prosecutor's request for prison time, citing the need to send a message to the community and to the victims who lost cars, houses and jobs due to Carter's actions.
