BELLEVILLE, Ill. (CN) - A man claims a defective locking mechanism in his artificial leg caused a lawnmower crash that cost him $30,000 in medical bills.
Richard Feaman served Fillauer Orthotics & Prosthetics, in St. Clair County Court.
Feaman says the leg's locking mechanism failed while he was driving a riding lawnmower on Sept. 2, 2009. He says his leg fell off, and "the sudden detachment of the prosthetic leg caused him to lost control of the riding lawnmower and crash."
Feaman says Fillauer's locking mechanism failed, it failed to warn him it could fail, and it failed to provide a secondary latch to secure the leg if the main latch failed.
The lawnmower crash injured his back and left shoulder.
He seeks damages for medical bills, product liability and negligence. He is represented by Suzanne Hardin with John Wallach's law office in St. Louis.
