Law Firm Says Scrushy Owes It $57,000

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. (CN) - Richard Scrushy and his defense counsel, Chadbourne & Parke, owe a law office $57,000 for litigation support work and salary during Scrushy's 2003 criminal trial, Law Partners LLC claims in Jefferson County Court.

Scrushy founded and was CEO of HealthSouth. The trial cited in this complaint appears to refer to federal tax charges, of which he was acquitted by a federal jury.

Scrushy's later trial, on charges of violating the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, was a media circus. The jury acquitted Scrushy of all 36 counts in June 2005, despite guilty pleas and testimony from five former top HealthSouth executives, all of whom implicated him.

Four months later, Scrushy was indicted on new charges, accusing him of donating $500,000 to Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman's campaign in exchange for a seat on a state hospital board. A federal jury convicted Scrushy and Siegelman in this case, which critics of the Bush administration have claimed was political persecution, managed by Karl Rove, to deny Siegelman re-election. Scrushy was sentenced to 82 months in prison.
