NEW YORK (CN) - A New York appeals court denied a law firm's bid to release more than $32,500 in attorney fees from embattled rapper Jamal "Shyne" Barrow's $500,000 advance from Island Def Jam Music Group.
The New York Supreme Court had prevented Barrow from dissipating the money after he was convicted of assault in connection with a 1999 shooting. It later released $100,000 to Barrow in order for him to pay the legal fees he incurred when alleged shooting victims sued to recover damages.
While the case was pending, Barrow landed a lucrative record deal with Def Jam.
Barrow's former counsel, Dershowitz, Eiger & Adelson P.C., filed a motion to release $32,594 from the frozen advance to cover unpaid attorney fees.
The appeals court held that the firm's motion to release funds "is, in effect, a motion to modify or partially vacate the preliminary injunction." As such, the lower court had the discretion to deny the motion.
