OAKLAND, CALIF. (CN) - The Department of Homeland Security illegally refuses to deliver records of the Customs and Border Protections' policies on questioning, searching and inspecting travelers entering the United States, the Asian Law Caucus claims in a federal FOIA complaint.
The Asian Law Caucus and the Electronic Frontier Foundation claim federal agents question travelers at length about their religious and political beliefs and inspect and copy personal items such as handwritten notes and computer files.
Many travelers feel they are being singled out because of their race or ethnicity, the suit states. Agents tell people who protest that they have no choice but to cooperate as they are at an international border.
The nonprofit plaintiffs say the government mailed them an undated letter over a month ago requesting a time extension to collect the records but have since sent no other communication. They want to see the records.
