Laredo Mayor Can’t Take Joke, Says Paper

LAREDO (CN) - Laredo Mayor Raul Salinas unconstitutionally ordered a weekly newspaper's news racks removed from City Hall and Laredo International Airport because it ran a cartoon criticizing him for approving the lease or sale of airport property for a mall on a wetland, the newspaper claims in Federal Court.

Plaintiff Shustring Publishing does business as LareDOS newspaper. It demands punitive damages from Salinas and Laredo.

Salinas apparently objected to the newspaper's use of skeletons to portray him and his dog.

Maria Eugenia Guerra, the newspaper's publisher, says Salinas' retaliation constitutes unconstitutional restraint. She is represented by James Harrington with the Texas Civil Rights Project of Austin.
