A lumbar vertebrae fossil belonging to a large horse that roamed the Los Angeles basin during the Ice Age was unearthed by crews excavating a subway tunnel for an extension of Metro’s Purple Line. Scientists advising Metro on paleontological mitigation said Monday that fossils from large ancient horses are uncommon discoveries. (Martin Macias Jr. / CNS)
