"La Liberté éclairant le monde," better known to Americans as the Statue of Liberty, as seen from the base of the pedestal. The copper statue — a gift to the people of France — was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who first had the idea for the project in 1865. It would be another two decades until the statue found its way to the pedestal on Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbor where it sits to this day. The 151-foot monument — 305 feet including the pedestal — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (Courthouse News photo / William Dotinga)
