L.A. Deputy Charged|With Taking Bribes

LOS ANGELES (CN) - State prosecutors charged a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy with taking bribes from friends to make their traffic tickets go away.

Edwin Tamayo, 39, was charged with six counts of conspiracy to obstruct justice, two counts of accepting a bribe and one count of preparing false documents. If found guilty, he faces up to 9 years and 8 months in state prison, the L.A. County District Attorney's Office said.

Based at the Lost Hills Station in Agoura Hills, Tamayo covertly accepted payments from friends or acquaintances at least twice, prosecutors said. He would remove the tickets before they were filed in court, and snatched court notices form a colleague's mailbox to avoid detection, according to the district attorney.

"In one instance, Tamayo was paid at least $1,000 by a driver to get rid of three tickets in 2012," the district attorney said in a statement.

About a year ago, Tamayo was featured in a Los Angeles Times article after he claimed the FBI had asked him to wear a wire to record a sheriff's deputy captain - part of a probe into alleged improper fundraising for former City Attorney Carmen Trutanich.

Tomayo is to be arraigned on June 25. Prosecutors want bail set at $190,000.
