One of the more dramatic memorials of National Mall war monuments, the Korean War Veterans Memorial shows the terror and futility of war like few others — especially on a chilly November morning. Nineteen stainless steel statues, each standing over 7 feet in height, represent a platoon on patrol drawn from all four branches of the armed services. The memorial was dedicated on July 27, 1995, the 42nd anniversary of the armistice that ended the conflict. (Courthouse News photo / William Dotinga)
