Kidney Donor Says Hospital Spilled the Beans

(CN) - A young woman who volunteered to donate a kidney to her uncle seeks punitive damages from the Riverside Community Hospital and the Riverside Transplantation Institute, saying that after her pre-operation physical, they told her uncle she was pregnant, without telling her, and she arrived home to find "a very angry set of family members."

Tashima George claims in Riverside Superior Court that the hospital, a doctor and a nurse released her medical records without her permission, causing her humiliation and distress.

The transplant surgery was called off.

She claims that the hospital and its transplant center promised her, "Your records will be protected, unless you tell the recipient of your decision, your family and the recipient will only be informed that you are not an acceptable match for donation." George says was "devastated" and "mortified" to learn of her pregnancy, and was rendered "sick, sore, lame, disabled and disordered" by the disclosure, suffering "numerous internal injuries, severe fright, shock, pain, discomfort and anxiety" that left her unable to work.

Also named as defendants are Dr. H. Erik Wahlstrom, and Deanna Olsen, a registered nurse.

George is represented by Patricia Law of Riverside, Calif.
