Kerik Accused of Lying to White House

WASHINGTON (CN) - A superseding federal indictment accuses former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik of making false statements to White House officials during his vetting for Homeland Security Secretary.

Contractors who sought city business provided more than $255,000 in renovations to Kerik's Riverdale apartment in 1999 and 2000, when he was NYC Commissioner of Corrections and then Police Commissioner, the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan said in a statement Tuesday. In 2004, Kerik gave false and misleading statements to White House officials while he was being interviewed for Homeland Security Secretary, a position that was offered and withdrawn, prosecutors said.

These charges were brought in 2007 in Manhattan but dropped because the actions allegedly occurred in the District of Columbia, prosecutors said. A federal grand jury returned the superseding indictment in Washington. If convicted, Kerik faces up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 on each of two charges in the new indictment.
