Kawasaki Rail Car Settles Toxic Waste Claims

MANHATTAN (CN) - Kawasaki Rail Car agreed to pay $130,000 to settle claims that its Yonkers plant improperly marked, labeled and stored flammable and hazardous wastes.

In 2006 the Environmental Protection Agency visited the Kawasaki plant, which makes, assembles and rehabilitates passenger railways and employs 300 workers. According to the complaint, its inspector found highly flammable methyl alcohol, paint primer leaks and a potential mercury risk caused by florescent bulbs that had been crushed in a compactor.

Kawasaki has since identified 3,000 pounds of waste paints and solvents and about 500 gallons of ignitable adhesives, performed an environmental audit and updated the facility to comply with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

"This case shows that EPA is making sure facilities meet the requirements of federal hazardous waste law, and where we find problems, we take action," said EPA acting regional administrator George Pavlou.

Kawasaki has 45 days to pay the settlement.
