KANSAS CITY, Kan. (CN) - Kansas accuses 13 major drugmakers of cheating it of millions of Medicaid dollars by grossly overcharging for prescription drugs. The state sued GlaxoSmithKline, Wyeth, Boehringer Ingelheim, Forest, Abbott, Dey, Takeda, Eisai, Purdue Pharma, Tap, Johnson & Johnson/Ortho-McNeil, Schering-Plough, and Mylan in separate complaints.
The Kansas attorney general says the state spent more than $160.4 million on Medicaid prescription drugs for its 260,000 covered residents in "the past year."
The state says the pharmaceutical companies knowingly reported "false and inflated" average wholesale price, wholesale acquisition cost and direct prices of their drugs to drug industry publications on which the state bases its Medicaid reimbursements.
The state sued them all in Wyandotte County Court.
