Kansas Elects Its First LGBT House Representative

Democrat Sharice Davids defeated incumbent Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder in the Kansas 3rd Congressional District race, becoming the first gay Native American woman elected to the U.S. House.

(CN) – Democrat Sharice Davids defeated incumbent Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder in the Kansas 3rd Congressional District race, becoming the first gay Native American woman elected to the U.S. House.

Davids beat out the four-time incumbent in a district that Hillary Clinton narrowly won by 1 point in the 2016 presidential election. Davids, like many Democrats, campaigned on a platform of health care, bringing up Yoder’s votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

As of 9:30 CST, Davids led Yoder 53-44 percent with 76 percent of precincts reporting in. The last Democrat to hold the seat was Dennis Moore, who retired in 2010.
