K.C. Fined $255,000 for Sewage Spill

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) - Kansas City will pay Missouri $255,000 for violating the state's Clean Water Law, after a 3-foot section of sewer pipe washed away. Attorney General Chris Koster said the city failed to control the release for 4 days, allowing 3 million gallons of sewage to flow into the creek.

Kansas City owns and operates seven wastewater treatment plants and 2,600 miles of sewer lines. The Department of Natural Resources has cited the city repeatedly for dumping sewage into rivers and streams since 2009.

Kansas City agreed to develop a plan under the settlement agreement. Of the $255,000 the city will pay, $135,000 will go toward a Supplement Environmental Project Plan to extend sewers to homes with septic tanks.
