(CN) - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg underwent heart surgery Wednesday morning after experiencing discomfort while doing routine exercise, the court said.
Ginsburg, 81, had a stent placed in her right coronary artery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. In a statement, the court said she is resting comfortably and is expected to be discharged within 48 hours.
Ginsburg was appointed in 1993 by President Bill Clinton and is the oldest sitting justice. She also is known to be an advocate of exercise, and has worked out with a personal trainer at the Supreme Court gym for years.
The court said Ginsburg felt the discomfort that led to her hospitalization during her Thursday night workout.
