Jury Wants Death Penalty for Racist Murderer

OLATHE, Kan. (CN) - An avowed racist who bragged that murdering three people during an anti-Semitic killing spree filled him with "overpowering joy and celebration" deserves to die, a Kansas jury found Tuesday.

Johnson County Jurors took less than two hours last week to convict F. Glenn Miller aka Frazier Glenn Cross Jr., 74, of murdering Dr. William Corporon, 69, his 14-year-old grandson, Reat Underwood, and Terri LaManno, 53.

The jury convicted Miller, who is representing himself, of three counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault.

Miller admitted gunning down the victims with a shotgun at two Jewish sites in Overland Park during an April 2014 shooting rampage. Miller, who suffers from emphysema, said his mission that day was to kill as many Jews as possible before he died, although all of his victims were Christian.

Assistant District Attorney Brian McMullin called the murders "wicked and shockingly evil" and asked jurors for the death penalty.

Miller had hoped to convince the jury during last week's penalty phase of the trial that the murders were "righteous and moral." He showed jurors anti-Semitic videos and World War II footage to explain what he called the "white genocide" committed by Jews as his motivation for killing.

Last week Miller called a former neo-Nazi as a witness, along with Miller's adult son, who later told reporters that he and his family disagreed with his father's views and have prayed for the families of the victims.

Tuesday's verdict on whether Miller should die by lethal injection or spend the rest of his life in prison without parole came after only 90 minutes of deliberation.

"Thank you," said Miller to jurors after the verdict. During the penalty phase of the trial, Miller said he hoped to receive the death penalty so he could die "a martyr."

Miller's gratitude quickly turned to hostility, though. After the verdict, Miller raised his arm in a "Heil Hitler" salute while Judge Ryan instructed the jury. When Miller interrupted, Ryan ordered him removed from the courtroom.

"Death to the Jews!" Miller yelled back as deputies wheeled him away.

The sentencing phase of Miller's trial begins on Nov. 10. Prosecutors plan to call family members of victims to testify.

"Hopefully this verdict and completion of the trial will allow those impacted to begin healing," said Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe.
