Jury Picked for Menendez Corruption Trial

Attorneys have selected a jury for the upcoming corruption trial of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez. The panel of six men and six women plus four alternates was selected Wednesday afternoon, a day after the questioning began.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A panel of six men and six women will decide the fate of Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., at his upcoming corruption trial.

Attorneys completed selection of the panel, plus four alternates on Wednesday afternoon, a day after the questioning began.

Menendez and Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen, a wealthy campaign donor, are charged with a bribery scheme involving gifts and donations in return for political influence.

Melgen, who is a co-defendant in the corruption trial, was convicted in federal court earlier this year on separate Medicare fraud charges. His sentencing on those charges was postponed earlier this month until after he stands trial with the senator.

Opening statements are scheduled for Sept. 6. The trial is expected to last about two months.
