Jury Awards $91,000 for Police Beating

ST. LOUIS (CN) - A federal jury awarded $91,000 to a man who said St. Louis police officers beat him as he tried to sell T-shirts outside Busch Stadium during a Cardinals game.

Patrick Lingo, 30, was awarded $25,000 in actual damages and $66,000 in punitive damages for the 2005 beating.

Lingo claimed the officers beat, slapped, choked and strip-searched him during interrogation.

Police accused Lingo of operating without a vendor's license, but eventually dropped the charge.

Lingo sued in 2006. Officers Steve M. Burle, Frederick Stith and James Welby, along with SLC Holdings, which owns the Cardinals, and Cardinals Director of Security Joseph Walsh were named as defendants. The jury found that the officers used excessive force and falsely imprisoned Lingo. A spokesman for the St. Louis Police Department told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that no official complaint has been filed against the officers and that they remain on the force.
