Judicial Candidate Says Paper Defamed Him

LAS VEGAS (CN) - The Las Vegas Tribune defamed a judicial candidate in a March 12 story published under the headline, "A Judicial Candidate With History of Domestic Violence" and the subhead, "David Rivers Wants to be Called 'Your Honor', but he lies and drinks," Rivers claims in Clark County Court.

Rivers also sued the Tribune Media Group Corp., the Las Vegas Tribune's publishers and top executives, and reporter Rolando Larraz.

Rivers, an attorney, claims the allegedly libelous headline and subhead appeared after Larraz asked him why he had withdrawn his candidacy for judge in Department VIII of the Eighth Judicial District Court and refilled to run in Department X.

Rivers claims the story also defamed him by stating that he "was unable to pay child support payments for his now grown daughter".

And he claims the Tribune defamed him by reporting that he "was born under a name other than the name listed as Plaintiff above and that his name was twice changed through the adoption of an alleged stepfather."

He says he demanded a retraction and the Tribune refused.
