Judge Wants Report on Chelsea Manning’s Care

(CN) - Signaling that the Pentagon has approved hormone therapy for transgender WikiLeaks source Chelsea Manning, a federal judge on Wednesday ordered a joint status report as to "whether intervening events have mooted some or all of the issues" Manning had raised.

The report is due March 4, court records show. Manning filed her lawsuit for an injunction on Sept. 23 in Washington.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly's docket entry Wednesday comes after the Chelsea Manning Support Network announced that the Department of Defense had approved Manning's care. Its Feb. 13 blog post says Manning confirmed with an organizers "that she had received her first hormone treatment."

Though hormone therapy is becoming de rigueur for federal inmates with gender dysphoria, "Manning's treatment will mark the first time the military has administered such care, as transgender individuals are currently not allowed to serve," the network said in a blog post.

Manning, who turned 27 on Wednesday, is serving a 35-year sentence in Ft. Leavenworth, Kans., for the biggest intelligence leak in U.S. history.
