LOS ANGELES (CN) - A judge Tuesday voided a $7.1 million jury award to former sports columnist T.J. Simers, ruling from the bench that he was not entitled to damages for age discrimination or emotional distress against The Los Angeles Times.
The ruling came after Superior Court Judge William MacLaughlin on Monday killed a $2.1 million award for economic damages.
MacLaughlin judge followed that with a bench ruling that voided the remaining $5 million.
The judge said claims for discrimination and constructive termination should be retried.
During a seven-week trial that concluded in November, Simers complained that the Times forced him out after he collapsed in March 2013 while covering the Dodgers and Anaheim Angels spring training.
The Times insists that Simers' allegations are unfounded.
