Judge Rymer of 9th Circuit Dies From Cancer

(CN) - U.S. Circuit Judge Pamela Ann Rymer of the 9th Circuit died Wednesday after battling cancer for several years, court officials announced. She was 70.

Appointed to the federal appeals court in 1989 by President George H.W. Bush, Rymer sat on more than 800 merits panels and authored 335 panel opinions.

Rymer was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and had been in failing health for months.

"Judge Rymer maintained her calendar throughout her illness," 9th Circuit Chief Judge Alex Kozinski said in statement. "Her passion for the law and dedication to the work of the court was inspiring. She will be sorely missed by all of her colleagues."

Rymer served on the federal bench at both the appellate and trial levels for more than 28 years. President Reagan appointed her to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in 1983. She practiced law in Los Altos, Calif., and Los Angeles, and was the first woman partner at the law firm of Lilick, McHose & Charles. She later started her own firm, Toy and Rymer.

Born in Knoxville, Tenn., Rymer grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and graduated from Stanford Law School in 1964.

Per Rymer's wishes, no services will be held.
