Judge Rejects Used-Syringe Settlement

LAS VEGAS (CN) - A state judge rejected a confidential settlement between a former patient and the insurer of the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada, which is at the center of the used-syringe, hepatitis C exposure scandal. Clark County Court Judge David Wall called the language of the settlement vague and ordered it rewritten.

Lawyers for Dr. Dipak Desai, who owns the Endoscopy Center, objected to the settlement between Nevada Mutual Insurance and former patient Michael Washington.

Washington says he got hepatitis C during a colonoscopy after Endoscopy Center workers reused syringes on hundreds of former patients.

Washington's lawyers said they would rewrite the settlement to satisfy the judge, according to reports from The Associated Press and the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Desai and others face similar lawsuits from 300 former patients.

Washington's case was to be the first of dozens to go to trial this week, but his case was pushed back to May, the Review-Journal reported.
