LAS VEGAS (CN) - A state judge on Wednesday ordered the doctor at the center of Southern Nevada's hepatitis C outbreak to undergo medical tests to determine if he's fit to stand trial.
Nevada state Judge Donald Mosley said Dr. Dipak Desai would undergo independent tests after suffering a stroke in 2008.
Desai was indicted on 28 charges, including racketeering, insurance fraud, criminal neglet of patients and other offenses for ordering workers at his Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada to reuse single-use vials of anesthetic and syringes on patients.
Officials say Desai and two anesthetists are tied to a hepatitis outbreak that infected at least nine people.
Desai will appear before Judge Jackie Glass on July 29 to discuss the exams.
His trial is expected to begin March 14 in Clark County Court.
