Judge Orders Release of RNC ’04 Arrest Docs

(CN) - The New York Police Department must turn over 2,000 pages of documents to the New York Civil Liberties Union concerning the department's mass arrests of protestors during the 2004 Republican National Convention, a federal judge ruled.

U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan's ruling stems from two federal lawsuits filed by the NYCLU challenging the mass arrests, prolonged detention and fingerprinting of 1,800 convention protestors, many of whom were detained for up to three days.

"We believe these documents will show that, contrary to the NYPD's claims, protesters were coming to New York City not to engage in violence but to engage in peaceful protest," NYCLU Associate Legal Director Christopher Dunn said.

The NYPD has said the arrests were justified based on information it received from surveillance operations, but refused to release those documents, claiming it would compromise ongoing investigations.
