SANFORD, Fla. (CN) - A Seminole County judge set a new bond of $1 million for George Zimmerman on murder charges in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Zimmerman was sent back to jail last month after the court found that he and his wife Shellie had been dishonest about the amount of money available to them.
In April, initial testimony had led Judge Kenneth Lester to set a bond of $150,000.
Shellie Zimmerman was asked at the first bond hearing if she and her husband had enough money to pay the bond, and was recorded as saying, "Um, not that I'm aware of."
Prosecutors said at that time Zimmerman had raised $135,000 on a website he created. Before the first bond hearing, Zimmerman tried to conceal how much money he actually had by paying off credit cards, paying his mom back for money he had borrowed, and transferring money to his wife and his sister, prosecutors said.
Zimmerman's attorney Mark O'Mara countered that the transfers aimed to put money in one account and then put in a trust for defense costs.
O'Mara chalked Zimmerman's inconsistency to lack of trust in the system.
Shellie Zimmerman was arrested last month for perjury and is currently out on a $1,000 bond. She faces arraignment on July 31.
