Judge for UK Child Sex Abuse Inquiry Resigns

LONDON (AP) — Britain's Home Office says the head of an inquiry into child sex abuse has resigned, the third person to leave the post since the probe was announced.

The departure of Justice Lowell Goddard comes after it was revealed that her pay and benefits totaled more than 500,000 pounds ($656,000) annually, and that she had spent more than 70 days working abroad or on holiday during her first year on the job. Goddard resigned Thursday in a two-sentence letter without give a reason for her decision.

The inquiry under Goddard, a judge from New Zealand, was set up amid public outcry following the 2011 death of entertainer Jimmy Savile, after which dozens came forward to say he had abused them.

Subsequent revelations have implicated entertainers, clergy and senior politicians.
