Judge Fogel Appointed to Lead D.C. Judicial Center

(CN) - U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel will leave California's Northern District to serve as director of the Federal Judicial Center in Washington D.C., Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts announced Friday.

After nearly 17 years of service to California state courts, President Bill Clinton nominated Fogel to the federal bench by in 1998. Fogel currently presides over the Northern District's San Jose courthouse.

Chief Justice Roberts, who chairs the board of the Federal Judicial Center, said Fogel has been "deeply involved in the Center's programs over the last decade."

Fogel is replacing Judge Barbara Rothstein, who served as the center's director for the past eight years. Rothstein, who was formerly a federal judge in the Western District of Washington, will return to the bench.

The Federal Judicial Center was created in 1967 to "further the development and adoption of improved judicial administration in the courts" and is located in D.C.'s Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Building.
