TUCSON, Ariz. (CN) - The Senate on Monday night unanimously confirmed U.S. Magistrate Judge Jennifer Guerin Zipps to fill a seat on the District Court left vacant after the killing of U.S. District Judge John Roll.
President Barack Obama nominated Guerin Zipps in June to replace Roll, who was gunned downed during a mass shooting in Tucson on Jan. 8 that also injured U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
Guerin Zipps, 46, has served as a federal magistrate judge in Arizona since 2005 and clerked for the 9th Circuit after graduating from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1990.
After clerking for Circuit Judge William Canby, she went into private practice with Molloy, Jones & Donahue in Tucson, then worked as an assistant U.S. attorney for several years.
Guerin Zipps received her bachelor's degree in 1986 from the University of Arizona.
