CHICAGO (CN) - A federal judge has extended to the entire state a preliminary injunction prohibiting a school district from observing a moment of silence. U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman said he had given school districts enough time to object to the March 28 preliminary injunction, and had received no objections.
Illinois lawmakers last year enacted a law that required schools take a moment of silence, suitable for prayer.
Radio talk show host Robert Sherman, an atheist, and his 14-year-old daughter sued Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Township High School District 214, where the girl is a freshman, claiming the law brought religion into public schools.
The original preliminary injunction applied only to Township High School District 214. Blagojevich had vetoed the law, but the House and Senate overrode it.
