Judge Earl Tapped to|Lead Sacramento Court

(CN) - Sacramento Superior Court elected Judge Laurie Earl to serve as the next presiding judge, replacing Judge Steve White.

Earl was appointed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in February 2005 and was elected as assistant presiding judge to the Sacramento court in November 2009. Prior to her appointment to the bench, Earl worked as an assistant inspector general, district attorney and public defender in Sacramento.

"This is an unprecedented time for the judicial branch, on both a statewide and local level," Earl said in a statement. "Sacramento Superior Court has an intelligent and engaged bench, as well as hard working and innovative staff. I am confident that with our collective commitment to justice, the Sacramento Superior Court will continue as a leader among trial courts and in serving the citizens of our community."

Judge Earl's term will start at the beginning of next year and will continue until the end of 2013. She will oversee 60 judges, seven referees and six commissioners who work in Sacramento County's seven court facilities.
