Judge declines to order Mississippi to issue nonreligious license plates

JACKSON, Miss. — A federal judge in Mississippi denied a group of individuals’ motion for an injunction to create a “neutral” license plate that removes “In God We Trust” from the design, claiming it violates their freedom of speech. They have adequately shown a free speech violation and cannot be compelled to display the phrase on their cars, but are not entitled to relief in the form of non-religious plates because they are legally allowed to cover up the phrase on their plates, per the Supreme Court case Wooley v. Maynard.
