Judge Declares Mistrial in Gotti Racketeering Trial

(CN) - A federal judge in Manhattan declared a mistrial in the racketeering trial of John "Junior" Gotti, son of the Gambino crime family mob boss, after the jury deadlocked. It's the fourth time in five years that a jury failed to reach a verdict in the case.

The jurors spent 11 days deliberating before telling U.S. District Judge Kevin P. Castel that they would not be able to reach a consensus.

"Judge Castel, we cannot reach a unanimous decision on any count," the jurors wrote in a note to the judge shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Gotti faces racketeering and murder charges for allegedly ordering mob hits and pocketing drug money.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said prosecutors were "disappointed" with the deadlock, but thanked the jurors for their service.

"The inability of the jury to reach a verdict does not diminish the work of the many agents, prosecutors, and staff who showed unyielding dedication and resolve in the investigation and prosecution of this case," Bharara wrote in a statement.

He said prosecutors were evaluating how to proceed.
