Iraq Demands Billions From Corporations That Profited From Oil-For-Food Corruption

MANHATTAN (CN) - The Republic of Iraq demands billions of dollars from more than 70 corporations that profited from corruption in the United Nations Oil-For-Food Program, "the largest financial fraud in human history."

Citing the Oct. 27, 2005, UN-sponsored Volcker Report, Iraq claims that though Saddam Hussein's regime devised the corruption, the defendants "individually decided to join the conspiracy in order to reap the economic benefits."

Without the participation of defendants, says the complaint, "the former Hussein's regime corruption of the OFFP would not have been possible."

The complaint continues: "Billions of dollars were lost, all of which was directly translatable into food, medicine and other humanitarian goods that were supposed to reach the Iraqi people. The resulting damage in human suffering caused to the Republic of Iraq and to the people of Iraq is virtually incalculable."
