Iona College VP Accused of Embezzling $850K

MANHATTAN (CN) - The former vice president of finance for Iona College surrendered Thursday on charges she embezzled $850,000 over the course of a decade. Marie Thornton swiped the money through false invoices and having the college pay her credit-card bills, according to the federal information.

Iona is a Catholic college with about 4,000 students, in Westchester County. The information seeks forfeiture of Thornton's property if she cannot pony up the $850,000.

(Editor's Note: The U.S. District Attorney's Office said in its first statement that Thornton was accused of embezzling $1.2 million, which is the amount mentioned in the federal information in the link on today's Courthouse News home page. The USAO issued a second statement today, Friday, saying that the amount of the alleged embezzlement was $850,000, not $1.2 million, and that a corrected information will be filed.)
