Inupiat Challenge Arctic Oil Leases

JUNEAU (CN) - Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne's plans to lease 29.4 million acres of public lands for oil and gas drilling on the outer continental shelf of the Chukchi Sea will devastate endangered wildlife, Native American villages and environmental groups claim in Federal Court. The Native Village of Point Hope and Inupiat Community of the Arctic Slope say their way of life already has been disrupted and threatened by climate change and reduction of sea ice, and the defendants did not address this or other environmental issues, as required by federal laws.
